Enjoyment is the cornerstone to achieving vibrant health, and it’s a pillar that is frequently overlooked.

As part of the health regime you recommend to your clients, it’s imperative to include fun. There are many health benefits of incorporating daily fun, and there’s a paper on this page for you to read and learn about several of them.

Included in the FUN pillar are activities to guide you to help your client get in touch with what they love to do, and for committing to a daily fun practice. 

Support them to create their very own personalized fun prescription and to reward themselves. Teach them how to have fun, no matter what the activity. Food preparation, exercise, de-stress activities — there are fun ways to accomplish all of their daily health practices.

Action Steps to Offer Your Clients

#1: Assess whether they’re making enough time for fun.

Fun Assessment: Do they make enough time for fun in day-to-day life? Have them complete this assessment to find out how they score on making time for fun!

#2: Help them to create their own personalized fun prescription.

pdfFun As An Antidote to Stress: This paper explains the benefits of fun, and ways to incorporate fun into daily life.  It includes a fun inventory you can share and suggest they complete.  It will help them re-ignite their interest in the fun activities that they currently, or in the past, have enjoyed, and can be used to create a plan moving forward.

#3: Teach them how to take appreciation breaks.

daisy heartSuggest that they keep trinkets, photos, and quotes around the area where they spend the most time. Surround themselves with their favorite pieces. I have a collection of special objects on the top shelf of the hutch that sits on top of my desk, including statues of mermaids and fairies, seashells, crystals, rocks, and a variety of beautiful hand-crafted trinkets. Interspersed are pictures of my kids and a plaque with inspiring words.

#4: Teach them how to play the appreciation game.

appreciationIt’s a simple, yet powerful game to play.  Staying in appreciation accesses inner healing potential.  It’s a good idea to play the appreciation game as they move through their day. You’ll be surprised at how uplifted and relaxed they feel when they become consistent.

The rules are simple: Every time you move to a new location, find three things to appreciate.

  • Maybe it’s a colleague’s pictures or plants.
  • Maybe it’s a glimpse of nature through the window.
  • Maybe it’s the workmanship in a piece of furniture.

#5: Invite them to schedule time for fun every day.

beach ball kidsMake time for fun each day, or at least several times per week. If you want to enjoy the same youthful vitality as a child, then fun should be second nature!

These are tips and tricks some of my clients have shared for making the “have to do” list a fun game:

  • One young woman purchased animal stickers and gave herself a sticker every time she stayed focused on her tasks at work, drank a smoothie, or engaged in any other of the new habits she was working to master.
  • Go to the party store and get yourself a fun party favor you can blow into or play with to celebrate successes or distract yourself from boredom.
  • Take breaks every hour and read a joke or watch a quick and funny video (YouTube has lots).
  • Do something periodically in your day that YOU consider fun and silly!

#6: Do all of these activities yourself, and learn what works best for you.

Schedule time to work through this module for yourself.  Do all the activities and assessments.  See how it feels, how long it takes, then decide which of these to use with your own clients.  Make up some fun steps of your own.  The sky’s the limit.  Skydiving anyone?
