October 2015 Conference Focus:
The Gut Brain Connection in Clinical Practice

Several years ago, scientists discovered—and began studying in depth—a strong link between gut health and mental health.

Gut Brain ConnectionIn fact, an article from Scientific American describes the network of neurons lining the human gut as a “second brain” because of the large number of important neurotransmitters that send messages to the brain … and it plays an important, integral role in our mental state and in certain diseases throughout the body.

While all thought and decision-making happens in your brain, the enteric nervous system—the sheaths of neurons embedded in the walls of the long tube of our gutcontains about 100 million neurons (more than either the spinal cord or the peripheral nervous system contain!).

So what does this mean?

The Gut: Your Second Brain

It means this “second brain” can control gut behavior independently of the brain, and, perhaps more importantly, that 90 percent of the fibers in the primary visceral nerve carry information to the brain (rather than the brain sending messages to the gut).

According to the Scientific American article, the nerves in your gut likely influence your emotions on a large scale.

And an article in Psychology Today states, “The gut and brain have a steady ability to communicate via the nervous system, hormones and the immune system. Some of the microbiome [in the gut] can release neurotransmitters, just like our own neurons do, speaking to the brain in its own language via the vagus nerve.”

The Gut’s Role in Mental and Physical Health

This article makes a couple of relevant points:

Gut-Brain-Connection-depression-high-blood-pressure-atherosclerosis-autoimmune-disordersFirst, the body responds to stress via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, putting you into “fight or flight” when it senses danger. Once danger has passed, your body uses negative feedback to tone down the fight or flight response. But under conditions of chronic stress, the feedback gets messed up, leading to a myriad of symptoms that accompany being in a persistent state of overwhelm.

Second, the hormonal system is easy to conceptualize, but the underlying system—the immune system—is more complex. When your body is under stress, it releases inflammatory cytokines, chemical messengers that bring a certain part of your immune system into high alert. Your body reacts to stress as if it is an infection.

Chronic levels of inflammatory response lead to chronic disease like depressive disorders, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and a number of autoimmune disorders. Immune system activation can also determine whether or not you develop cancer. The gut microbiome plays a key role in regulating your immune response.

So, the makeup of your gut microbiome could make the difference as to whether you’re sick or well—mentally and physically.

So … what does all of this mean to you as a holistic health practitioner?
